Under the Influence of Mexico

Arts
Simon Bond, West Australian 2004

Mike and Janet Green’s exhibition at Perth Galleries is a result of a trip to Mexico. Each artist is a superb craftsman and has distilled their experiences intoPainting.

Mike Green’s work is stunning in technique. It comes as a surprise to find that to find that his large, high-resolution images are in fact, the product of a traditional watercolour technique in which the highlights are the unpainted paper.

Blonde is a work dominated by a large female stiletto shoe. It stands in a dry, barren landscape with distant hills behind it. On the ground around it are strewn small traditional cakes and tarts. The wind swirls an assortmentof shopping bags into the air.

Like several other of his images, this work seems to be referring to an idealisation in Mexico of the consumer culture north of he border.
